Town of Tilting

The Town of Tilting is a National Historic Site of Canada and Newfoundland and Labrador's First Provincial Registered Heritage District

In Tilting you will find a village untouched by time, with a unique cultural landscape reminiscent of rural Ireland, complete with a remarkable collection of small outbuildings associated with the family based inshore fishery, family neighbourhoods, family gardens, and grazing animals.

Local Attractions

Lane House Museum

Believed to be the oldest extant house in Tilting. Built by Augustine MacNamara, an Irish Immigrant, around 1836. Open daily from 10 am to 8 pm early July to late September.

The Dwyer Premises

Built by Vincent Bryan in the early 1870's, the premises consists of a traditional house, stage, store, wharf, and an extensive network of flakes. Premises and Craft Shop open daily from 10am to 8 pm early July to late September.

Bunker Hill

Site of the first ground warning radar station in the North Atlantic during World War II. Manned by the 185th airborne division of the United States Army.

Sandy Cove Beach

One of the most magnificent natural sandy beaches in Newfoundland. Home to the annual Beach Festival the last weekend of each July.

Stages and Stores

In Tilting, there exists numerous restored fishing stages and stores and other outbuildings related to the family based inshore fishery. These structures give visitors an opportunity to see the traditional process for processing fish, and a glimpse into Newfoundland’s past.

Old Irish Cemetery

Located near Lighthouse Hill and the Lane House Museum, historians believe that this burial site is the oldest Irish Catholic graveyard in Newfoundland. Resting place of the 18th century Irish immigrants who originally settled Tilting, and whose descendants remain today.
